Interview of Frankie Fredericks PDF Print E-mail
From now on IOC member, Namibian born Frankie Fredericks lighted up the athletics tracks all over the world. Holder of impressive titles and records, Frankie Fredericks was one of the best sprinters of all times. An interview with a champion of eternal Olympic spirit.

Either yesterday as an athlete or today as IOC member, what do Olympic Games represent to you?
The Olympics is the best thing that ever happened to me. I met some wonderful friends at the Olympic Games. As the athlete representative on the IOC I can tell you that the Olympics is for the athletes. Athletes are at the very heart and soul of the Olympic movement.

Many people discovered Namibia by watching you running in the Olympic Games. Did the fact of being regarded as your country’s Ambassador give you a particular responsibility in your career?
It was an honor for me to compete for our young nation. As an athlete I accepted the role of ambassador to carry the flag of our country, because many people died for our independence to give me the opportunity to compete against the rest of the world.

When you announced the end of your sporting career, you stated that: “I will now go through the African continent to share my experience with the younger ones.” Nowadays, what is exactly your investment in the African youth?
Since my retirement, I visited several countries, particularly to give motivational talks and for clinics. In Africa I visited Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Senegal, Algeria, Congo, Ethiopia, Burundi, Seychelles and Mauritius. Outside our continent, I visited Iceland, Germany, Malaysia, Japan, China and Romania.

Africa has of - fered outstanding moments of emotion in Olympic Games. What is the most beautiful image that you keep in mind about Africa shining at the highest level?

When the South African Josa Thugwane won the marathon in Atlanta.

Do you think Africa can host the Olympic Games in the near future?
Yes.

To conclude, who will win the 100m and 200m races in Beijing according to you?
I’m not a gambler, but I’m always for the underdog !
